Selling Your Operational Website

Many people nowadays are involved in marketing domain names.   This has become a very lucrative business segment because it is like buying and selling stocks and bonds.  Similarly, it is a knowledge-laden business because it is what you do not know that can hurt you.   There are now even better ways to earn money with domains and websites.   The best of these is the Setup/Build/Dump Method which is the subject of this article.  This method of marketing websites actually came about by accident – meaning, that we did not actually intend to do what we ultimately did, it just happened.

We decided to make a play into the Life Insurance Lead Brokering business segment.  Like many other service industries – and you will see them on TV all the time – there are firms that do nothing but get leads, which they then sell to service providers.  Because of the technology support available – especially online and on television – these leads are available, usually for about $50/ea. because they are hot-transferred to the ultimate lead buyer, and routed in real time to their call center or directly to a rep.

We got into this marketing segment by acquiring a life insurance website domain name and purchased a ‘brown & serve’ website, so we were up and running in less than ten days.  We then built a track record of links-producing free traffic to the site, which were very easily monetized by direct sale to LI agencies.  Since, in the meantime, our primary business really took off, we decided to dump the LI Lead website.   We sold the site, domain name and website presence in a single transaction to one of the firms marketing with PPC ads – on the same page we showed up on.   The transaction yielded approximately $3500, so we were able to net over three grand on the deal.  It took four specific elements and tactics to make this happen.

1.  The Domain Name.  We chose a domain name that had the keywords ‘Life’ and ‘Insurance’ as well as the city name that we were focusing on.  You can do this with other cities – of some size of course.

2.  The ‘brown& serve’ website.  There are several template providers that now offer a complete website that is preloaded with all you data, and the best one have pre-existing business segments, like RE, LI, etc.

3.  The Traffic Source.  We used what is referred to in the world of IMs as the Ezine/Blogger Pinwheel which generated page one results in less than a month.  The verifiable website traffic was the proof that the site was indeed worth the asking price.

4.  The Selling Scenario.  We sent a simple email to all the PPC advertisers on Page One of the same Google Results Page that we were on, offering to sell the site – once proof of business success was verified – to the first firm to PayPal us more than $3000.  It took less than a week total to complete the sale.  Note:  if you are planning to market your own site off your own server be sure to keep an updated Windows System Registry.  You can purchase and download a top registry software package that does this.  They also perform the other registry fix functions that accomplish any needed Registry Repair.
