Dedi servers a timeline

Back as far as the 1950’s mainframes were being used- what would later be known as dedicated servers. These mainframes or servers were used mostly for data manipulation tasks. The same architectures were used right up until the beginning of the 1990s when the internet was starting to develop. It was when websites and the world wide web became rife, that dedicated servers became a well know phrase. And so it is, dedicated server hosting became what we have as we speak.

A dedicated servers workload isn’t that different to what it was in the beginning. In the 90’s dedicated servers were used for email and file storage Then as business changed and the internet became more wide spread more and more web servers were put online to cope with this new demand. Don’t be surprised if the demand for dedicated server hosting changes again. Think of how Google has changed in terms of marketing, and the demand for services round that.

Since the beginning server operating systems have changed with demand. The demand for different ‘flavours’ of operating systems is hugely diverse. Linux is by and large more popular, as its considered more secure. The majority of Linux operating systems are free, although some premium versions are paid.

Like desktop computer hardware server hardware has also been developed at the same rate and some desktop features originated in servers first. At one time multiple CPU’s were the rage. Server hosting architecture supports multiple cores on single CPU’s these days. However most do not need this with the introduction of dual and quad core CPUs. On its way for server hosting, 6 and 8 core CPU’s.

RAM is another area where the amount needed has grown with the amount that programs need. There was a time when you could count the amount of megabytes of RAM your server had on one hand. You wouldn’t be able to count the number of gigabytes on your hand these days. You will also find all sorts of different types of RAM for different server hosting requirements.

Generally speaking, whatever hardware is being used for server hosting now, will appear on your average desktop in around a year and a half.

So where will server hosting go in the future? You can be absolute sure the hardware will be more powerful. Server hardware is dicated really by what’s coming next. Look at how Facebook changed the way the internet worked. It’s best to predict server hosting will evolve with the next big websites.
