How To use SPSS

SPSS is not a familiar term to many people as many people do not know what it is. For those however who have gone through college they have a rough idea of what this term means. SPSS is a very effective as well as efficient way of analyzing data.SPSS can take any type of file and at the same time use the information in the file to be able to tabulate reports, charts, plots as well as trends. This data is analyzed in a number of things and this will include the information that is used to conduct survey or any time when numbers will need to be crunched.
In order to be able to know how to use SPSS you do not have to be a computer whizz. In order to be familiar with how to operate SPSS you will need a disc downloaded to your computer. There are a few steps that you need to follow to the latter in order to familiarize yourself wit SPSS operations. The first step is to go to your desktop and click on the Start button where you should choose “Programs” and then proceed to SPSS for Windows. You should then be able to see a list of boxes that will include variable names.
These variable names should always be in alphabetical order so that they will help you when you are trying to change the order. In order to make this possible you need to go to the menu and the choose Edit then choose Options which will then take you to the General Tab and here you are supposed to select Display labels in the variables list group. Here is where you should select the Alphabetical option and then click on OK twice. When you are trying to open a data file you will need to choose File from the menu and then click on Open then finally click on Data and the Open File box will be displayed.
Choose the Tutorial folder which you should double click and then double click the sample file folders. You should then proceed to click on a file named demo.sav and then click on Open. A menu will display where you are supposed to choose the option View and then Value Labels. You can also run an analysis using SPSS and this can be accomplished by choosing Analyze from the menus and then go to Descriptive Statistics and finally to Frequencies. After this, you will have a display that will have the Frequencies dialog box which will include icons that provide all the information that you need about data type and also level of measurement.
